TERRASAFE, a project in which EDAFOTEC Nature-Based Solutions participates as a partner, has just been approved by the European Union, within the Horizon Europe program.  It is a pioneering initiative that aims to empower local communities in Southern Europe and North Africa to successfully face the growing challenges of desertification through the adoption of nature-based social and technological innovations. TERRASAFE will be implemented in 5 pilot areas in Europe and North Africa that share a high vulnerability to desertification and simultaneously represent the 4 main types of desertification (vegetation decline, soil degradation, water scarcity and depopulation), with a high cultural and ecological social contrast. The project is supported by a transdisciplinary consortium with partners from eleven countries, including universities and SMEs, such as EDAFOTEC, being these companies the ones that provide the innovations, which will be developed in the pilots....

On October 2, the results of the call for pre-commercial Ports 4.0 projects, organized by Puertos del Estado, were published. EDAFOTEC's proposal, Puerto Residuo 0, aimed at designing the sustainable use of dredged sediments has been selected. We would like to thank the evaluation committee for its decision, in a process in which 116 proposals were submitted and 30 have been approved, and ours has been ranked 16th. We would also like to thank the Port of Seville, which has been a facilitator of the project to carry out the pilot, and the Ports of Avilés, Bilbao, and Vigo, which have shown their support for our project. ...

The C-Sink project, financed by HORIZON EUROPE, began its journey on June 1, once the financing agreement has been signed by the European Union. The objective of the C-SINK project is to deliver to the EC a comprehensive package of proposals to support a new or modified European legal/regulatory framework, allowing high-quality CDR technologies to be brought to the market. This package will contain pre-standards (in CEN format) that will cover the requirements and methodologies of sampling, testing, and QMS (ISO9000), on which to build monitoring, reporting, and verification systems. It will also include proposals to resolve: environmental, social impact, and governance issues, and the means to build trust in the market. There are several CDR (Carbon Dioxide Removal) technologies that will be validated in the project and Edafotec will contribute to the CO2 sequestration in artificial soils. Artificial soils made from suitable materials can store large amounts...

On the occasion of the completion of the BtoGSoils project, “Greening brownfields. “A circular technology for decontamination of industrial soils”, we held a webinar on 04/26/2023 to disseminate the objectives and the results. BtoGsoils is a soil decontamination project, distinguished with the European Union Seal of Excellence. Its execution was co-financed by FEDER Funds through Aid to promote Galician participation in the European Union Research and Innovation Framework Program (Horizon 2020) from GAIN....

EDAFOTEC and its scientific collaborator INDUROT presented at the World Soil Congress, held at the end of July and beginning of August 2022 in Glasgow (Scotland), the results of the BtoG project which is financed by GAIN (Galician Innovation Agency)....

EDAFOTEC has a representative in Colombia, Construedificar, since July 2022. Construedificar is a company focused on solutions for water decontamination for sixteen years and, through the alliance with EDAFOTEC, it will expand its field of action to contaminated and degraded soils. It is a pleasure for EDAFOTEC to expand its representation in Latin America, joining our subsidiary in Peru and our representative in Mexico, Black to Green. https://construedificar.com/...

In July 2022, Ana Machado, Scientific Director of Imflorestal, participated in the IX Iberian Congress of Soil Sciences (CICS 2022) held in Oeiras - Lisbon. She presented the Mindingsoils project, where the remediation of acid mine drainage by using artificial soils with biochar is evaluated. This project is coordinated by EDAFOTEC, with the participation of Imflorestal and Tharsis Mining, and it is financed with funds from the Horizon Europe program. The basic pillar of the MINE THE GAP initiative is to strengthen synergies between small and medium-sized companies in the mining sector and favor the circular economy....

World Soil Day is celebrated next December 5th. The FAO has prepared very interesting information to disseminate the topic of this year 2022: the importance of soil as the origin of food. https://www.fao.org/world-soil-day/en/  ...

On 19/10/2021 the small-scale experiment of the BtoGSoils project started, which is being carried out in the laboratory of the INDUROT research group of the University of Oviedo. This experiment will allow us to know the lindane degradation capacity of different treatments, in which artificial soils, lindane degrading bacteria and biochar are combined. The most effective treatment will be selected for implementation in a pilot field experiment. This experiment is funded by the Galician Innovation Agency (GAIN) and co-financed by the European Fund for Rural Development, under the FEDER Galicia 2014-2020 operational programme.  ...

EDAFOTEC will participate in the EU Green Week (#EUGreenWeek) with an infoday on 18 May 2021 within the international initiative "4p1000 - "Soils for Food Security and Climate" with the event "Nature-based solutions for soils regeneration towards the circular economy". The 2021 edition of the EU Green Week will be held again from 31 May to 4 June 2021, with partner events taking place between 3 May and 13 June.
