From June 17 to 21, 2024, the first meeting of the TERRASAFE project took place, with EDAFOTEC participating alongside partners from 12 countries. The TERRASAFE project, funded by the European Union under the HORIZON EUROPE program, has the general objective of significantly empowering local communities in Southern Europe and Northern Africa to face the growing threats of desertification, especially those accelerated by climate change. This will be achieved through the co-development, co-implementation, co-evaluation of cost-effectiveness, co-demonstration, co-dissemination, and co-promotion of the widespread adoption of nature-based, technological, and social innovations for the prevention and restoration of land degradation. To this end, technologies will be implemented in pilot projects in Cyprus, Spain, Italy, Romania, and Tunisia. EDAFOTEC will participate in these pilots by providing technologies that contribute to better waste utilization, improve soil quality, and increase soil water retention. ...

During the first semester of the Puerto Residuo 0 project (January-June 2024), the selection, sampling and characterization activities of the waste that will be used to prepare the artificial soil have been carried out. In addition, the dredged sediment that will be used and the soil where the pilot plot will be implemented were analyzed. These results will allow us to design the most appropriate artificial soil for the pilot plot in the second half of the project. One of the project activities is to evaluate the greenhouse gas emissions mitigation potential of artificial soils made from dredged sediment. During the first semester, the gases emitted by the selected sediment have already been quantified. In the image you can see the experiment to sample gases in the laboratory of the Uxafores research group, at the USC Campus Lugo. ...

C-SINK. Actions required to secure the large-scale deployment of the leading CDR approaches to meet EU climate targets Call: HORIZON-CL5-2022-D1-01-01-two-stage. Execution period: 01/06/2023- 31/05/2027 The C-sink project started in June 2023. Edafotec is one of the 24 partners of the consortium, involved in different activities related to artificial soil technology. The main objective of C-SINK is to deliver to the EC a comprehensive package of proposals to support a new or modified European legal framework to bring high-quality CDR to the market. CDR means “carbon dioxide removal”. Some technologies can capture CO2 and store its C in the long-term, avoiding their return to the atmosphere. The C-SINK project will establish robust MRV pre-standards and policy strategies based on a comprehensive assessment of environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria relevant to CDR, facilitating the development of reliable quantification methodologies. MRVs means Monitoring, Reporting and Verification programs. The project includes 7 technologies...

Today, 1st September 2021, officially starts the MINDINGSOILS project, the winning project of the European Mine The Gap call. MINE.THE.GAP is an innovation project funded by the European Commission as part of the INNOSUP programme. The main ambition of the MINE.THE.GAP call is to provide SMEs in the mining sector from eight different European countries with the necessary tools to improve their competitiveness, boost their growth and implement new services, solutions and/or products through cross-sector and cross-regional collaboration. The objective of the MINDINGSOILS project (Artificial soils with biochar applied to prevention of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) within circular economy framework) is to demonstrate, through a pilot test (TRL 7), innovative green technologies in the field of mine restoration and closure to prevent Acid Mine Drainage (AMD). The technology applied in the project is based on artificial soils, made from organic and inorganic waste from the mine and...

BtoGsoils, "Greening brownfields. A circular technology for decontamination of industrial soils", a R&D project developed by EDAFOTEC received in 2020 the "Seal of Excellence" in the Green Deal call of the European Union's H2020 programme. As a result of this Seal of Excellence, the project has been co-financed by European funds (ERDF) through GAIN, the Galician Innovation Agency, and also has the support and collaboration of the City Council of O Porriño in Galicia. BtoGsoils started in November 2020 and will run until the end of 2022. During the course of the project, EDAFOTEC will carry out a pilot project in a public plot of the City of O Porriño, with the aim of decontaminating the area affected by lindane, using nature-based technologies. Lindane is an organochlorine pesticide widely used in the agri-food and pharmaceutical industry until the 1990s. This pesticide is highly polluting and persistent. Decontamination of...

Edafotec has participated in the project "Application of new Micotecnosols and mycorrhiza-forming fungi to the bioremediation of soils disturbed and contaminated by slate mining for their rehabilitation as productive ecosystems (MICOTECNOSOLES II)" funded by the Galician Innovation Agency (GAIN) and co-financed by the European Fund for Rural Development within the Conecta Pyme 2016 Program. The project started on February 10, 2016 and finished on November 30, 2018. The main objective of the MICOTECNOSOLES II project has been the design and production of new artificial soils to be applied in the rehabilitation of heaps affected by slate mining in Galicia and the aggregation of different species of Mycorrhizal Fungi (Mycorrhizoremediation) with special attention to the recovery of the productive use of soils. The consortium has been formed by 4 SMEs: Hifas da Terra, Centro de Valorización Ambiental del Norte, Edafotec Suelos a la Carta and Compañía Gallega de Silvicultores....

MYCOTECNOSOL: FORMULATION AND DEVELOPMENT DESIGN OF TECHNOSOLS FOR THE BIO-REMEDIATION OF SOILS CONTAMINATED BY HYDROCARBONS AND HEAVY METALS THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF DIFFERENT SPECIES OF FUNGI   The activities of storage, transfer or distribution of hydrocarbons usually generate discharges into the environment. The problem is not limited to large pipelines and storage areas, but also to the further distribution of refined products. Often, oil pollution is accompanied by other pollutants such as heavy metals, as used in roads, mining projects, industrial facilities, etc. The proximity of these areas to population centres and the high toxicity and persistence of these pollutants requires the development of strategies to remediate soil contaminated by these compounds. The MYCOTECNOSOL project proposes the use of living organisms to degrade these compounds naturally through bio-remediation. The goal of the MYCOTECNOSOL project is to create new Technosols that are able to enzymatically degrade and retain hydrocarbons by...
